House Proposes Amendment To Change Start Date Of Congressional Sessions
February 10, 2026 - The House today proposed an amendment to the Jesstopian Constitution moving the start of the New Congressional Session from January 1 back to November 10, the date in which most Representative-Elects and Senator-Elects take office. The amendment was proposed as law makers call swearing-in day and the start of the new congressional incongruent and confusing.
"Today the House proposed Amendment 28 to the Jesstopian Constitution aimed at making Congressional Sessions less confusing to our constituents who think freshly sworn in members of Congress are in the new session when in reality they finish out the remaining few months of the ending session," said Speaker Gregory Harks. "What this will do, is allow members to complete full terms starting on November 10, which would not only be the start of their terms, but the start of the new session of Congress each year. Due to House and Senate terms being 3 years, only 1 in 3 years would see new members start a new session of Congress. We hope to get state support by at least 8 states which is required to pass the amendment."
